The Firelighter

Standing on Evereast Island, Sasha watches the sailboat disappearing beyond the sea horizon, knows he has been abandoned at the end of the world. He looks around, finding this isolated island at the most east part of the world like a piece of rusted iron exposed on the ocean, lifeless.
Sasha trudges, because of seasickness for days, towards island's interior. It's pretty small, so he arrives the center soon, sees that there is a dark hole on a hill, like a peculiar eye staring at him. Around the hole lies a black layer of coaldust. He knows that it's a mine. Besides the hole there is a huge iron wok on the open space, settled on a huge stone stove. He has never seen such a huge wok before. If it turns over, it could be a large roof and the largest one he has ever seen.
Sasha hasn't seen large house before, because he never travels far. Since he has fallen in love with Icia, the rest of the world doesn't interest him anymore. But for her, this time he takes the farthest travel to the end of the world.
There is no fire in the stove. Strange oil smell permeates in the air, coming out from the wok.
Darkness covers the mine's bottom, but Sasha finds a wavering spark of light deep in darkness, soon he discerns it a torch on a mine car going up slowly, and that it's dragged by a man until it comes close. Piled full with coal, it goes creakily along the shabby wooden track to the outside of mine. Sun shines on the miner. Sasha sees him a lanky elderly, thin and dark, like a length of dryrotten root dug from coal bed.
"Help me." says the elderly, so Sasha does, pushes the car from behind. It stops by the coal pile besides the huge wok, looks like all coal from this mine is used to burn under this huge wok.
Exhausted, the elderly sits on the ground against the wheel, wheezing.
"I come to seek you, I come to beg you." says Sasha without asking who the man is, since he must be the man he seeks. There is only one living on Evereast Island.
"Beg me? Just a man lighting fire I am, a whole life for bitterness I spend." The elderly says, waving his hand.
"People say you can make the incurable healed and live."
"I can't live any longer either. Aged." The firelighter sighs deeply.
"Everyone on earth has a star of her or his own in the heaven. If something wrong happens on the star and the starlight can't shine on the person, she or he sicks. If the starlight glimmers dimly continuously, she or he turns incurable."
"Everyone knows that."
"You have a big book documenting the location of everyone's star. You can climb up onto the heaven to repair the sick star."
"Are you sick?"
"The girl I love is sick. Incurable. I know money is of no use for you here, but if you repair her star, I can do anything for you, even go to die for you! If you don't promise me, I would suiside on this island. I couldn't live without her."
"So this is love, huh?" The firelighter raises his head, staring on Sasha. It is difficult for him to focus the sight of his aged eyes on Sasha's face. He smiles with slight irony, however, he seems to be a little interested by Sasha.
Sasha says no more, kneels silently by the firelighter.
"Don't go to die, succeed me."
"Fine, I succeed you and work as a firelighter on this island for the rest of my life!"
Without words, the old firelighter stares at Sasha for a while, suddenly he laughs, shaking his head: "Hehehe, all of those who came before said like you. But after I repaired the stars they let me repair, they left."
"I won't go, I will succeed you, I swear!"
The firelighter stands up with difficulty and beats the waist, says:"I Try then. I can only try every time. What else can I choose?"
