Chapter 3 The Floating Skeleton (I)

Time flies, the college senior internship came to us unconsciously. As the monitor of my class, I was assigned to the Pubilc Security Bureau (PSB) of Nanjiang City with another eight classmates, which we began to practice in forensic specialty. The PSB of Nanjiang City boasted many graduating classmates from our school, we received a warm welcome from them. Even if in 2002, the infrastructures at Forensic Center of PSB of Nanjiang City were second to none across the country, which was absolutely stunning to us. The whole Forensic Center covers an area of twenty-five acres, which boasts one office building, one dormitory building, four separate prosectoriums and one cadaver refrigerator which can accommodate ninety-eight corpses. In addition, there are fish pond, vegetable fields and shooting ranges. In our province, we didn’t have such a forensic center like this.
The cadaver refrigerator generally acknowledged to be a fairly terrible place. The gruesome and frigid corridor arranged two rows on its both sides, each of them placed dozens of quadruple-integrated freezers. The ninety-eight empty bunks were almost full because the bodies were regularly taken to funeral parlour. The guarder was an employed elder man. As we were the newcomers, he asked us with concern whether we were afraid of the corpses. My classmates all felt scary but me. On one hand, I had some experience of dissection, on the other hand, I was keen on face-saving as the monitor, scorned to say “Scary? Why would I be afraid of? They’re just corpses.”
