词源达戈-努因-吉利亚斯是辛达语的“星下之战”，[6]由下面的元素组成：达戈（dagor-战争） 努（nu-下方） 吉（gil-星星） 阿斯（ath-集体复数后缀）
传说故事集中的其他版本在早期的著作中，这场战斗最初被命名为Dagor-os-Giliath[7]，但后来被改为Dagor-nuin-Giliath（达戈-努因-吉利亚斯），还有另一种变体Dagor-nui-Ngiliath。[8]这场战役曾经被认为是贝烈瑞安德战争的第一场战役，但后来辛达族同魔苟斯发生的战争被纳入贝烈瑞安德战争的一部分，故而星下之战成为贝烈瑞安德的第二场战争。[9]
