There is a Chinese myth about the Four Demons, in Chinese Xiong, which indicate the four demons banished to four directions by Emperor Shun. They are Hundun, Taotie, Qiongqi, and Taowu.
The image of Hundun is controversial. Some said it was like a dog, others said it was like a bird. But indisputably, it has no face. The name of Bai Wuxiang originally has the meaning of having no face. He also always wears a mask with half smile and half weep, and never shows others his real appearance.
The image of Taotie is recognized as sheep body, human face, tiger teeth, and human hands, with eyes in armpit and voice like baby. Some said Taotie ate so much that it even ate its body and only remained a large head with a large mouth. He Xuan is sometimes anorexic and sometimes bulimic, partly similar to Taotie. Besides, there was usually pattern of Taotie on bronze wares in Shang and Zhou dynasty. According to the cognition during that period, Taotie had not only wolf’s character but also dragon’s face, so it might be the transition between wolf totem and dragon totem.
