A band of children crowded round him. And over Miss. Cathy’s head, I looked at a dirty, ragged, black-haired child——big enough to walk and talk. Yet, when he was set on his feet, he just stared around repeating what nobody could understand. I was frightened and Mrs. Earnshaw was ready to throw him out of doors. She did get angry, asking why he had brought that Gypsy child into the house when they had their own kids to feed and look after. Needless to say, they hardly earned enough to keep body and soul together.
