Or maybe the world itself is just hostile... Imagine the natural state of the world to be strange and terrible and then comes a happy alien space invader to horrifying planet Earth, splits off some worms from his Godly creature form and creates life. When those worms (or rather the great great great grandchildren called humans) dig too deep and awaken the ancient horror inside, 'Earth' discoveres that there are colonies of tiny parasites living on its surface!
